Felicity ‘06 – Day 1

February 5, 2006

Hiya Blog! havent been blogging for quite sometime. But the way Felicity took off spurred me to write a post after long time.

Just before the events began there was a lot of talk about Felicity being a low-key affair this time, organizer’s not being active etc. But when it actually started there was hardly any scope for complaints.

The first day events simply rocked. The snake-show was a real entertainment. Googs as usual was busy with the camera capturing the cobras, vipers and pythons. The idea of snake-show to begin the fest was good for two reasons : first, its just different. The novel idea of showing real snakes rather than showing snake-dance by a pretty girl made lot of sense to me. second, it was very informative, the demonstrator from the snake-lovers society gave us concise ‘all you need know about snakes’ lecture covering identification of the type of the snake, first-aid for snake-bites etc. The event made me and Vardhman stay back to watch the rest of the events [Googs was actually planning to goto Mehdipatnam] and it turned out to be a great decision.

The Bharatnatyam marathon by kids aged bet’n 7-13 was spectacular [they students of Sri VS RamaMurthy]. Imagine a seven year old kid balancing herself carrying a lamps on her head and in both hands, then balancing herself on a pot on one leg!!… and it didnt stop there : about 20 kids danced for about 20 min on those pots with the lamps in tact and most of time performed feats that involved balancing on one leg. The central performer danced on a pot that stood on another stand (about 3 feet tall ).. now that I noticed that the stand was unstable but she performed with such skill and poise that nobody actually noticed it. It was splendid display of the beauty and grace of Bharatanatyam [and imaginge it being done by tender kids ].

Next, Fusion music by Devan & co. : not as good as the show by Nagraj & co. at the other Felicity but this too was very good one. Flute Phani, percussionist and of course the anchor-girl Preeti grabbed lot of attention. The little girl, Bhanu deserves a special mention : as her uncle entertained the crowds with his music she did her own bit by dancing tirelessly for about half-an-hour and stoled the focus of most the front-seat audience. I and Vardhman were so impressed that I took her on to the stage to introduce her to the audience. Overall the first day was a hit and Felicity ‘06 started off with a style of its own and clearly showed why Felicity is different techno-cultural festival.

Now for the morning events : ISB Dean MR Rao was chosen to kick of the fest and gave a lecture on three seemingly disjoint topics : Knowledge Mamangement, Research Culture and Leadership. All the while I understood what he was saying but failed to see how its relevant to the audience. The only thing that grabbed my attention was the mention of IISER (Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research). Of course there were the normal humourous moments to relish : the jokes on Infy’s aggressive recruitment, Punctuality being some that I can recall. The followed a workship on 3D-animation [courtesy ColorChips].

Me and Googs then turned to the other color that decorated the campus by mid-day.. a delight for a starved IIITian : mediocre to the rest of the world but an extra-ordinary sight for a IIITian. Maen, someone do something to improve this thing. It kinda used to be normal during B.Tech days but now with all 2k1ites describing the colors they see at their offices its getting more and more difficult. We participated in the debugging thing and parallely tried our luck with some color but by evening there was so much color that we realized its not worthy to hunt only one and miss the sight of others. We made it to the finals of D-bug the C-bug and I am looking forward to winning this one as I ran out of pocket money [we could get a 1k bucks each if we do].
